Problem

Helping Shark Beauty become a household name in the haircare industry.

Shark Beauty briefed our design team to define their new styling products market potential for the near future. As well as solving a key functional issue. The current design produced an unpleasant user experience (choppy-ness) when one brushed through their hair.

In order to solve the products pain points, our design proposal was threefold:

  • Usability Analysis
  • Hair Care Specific Research
  • Solution Driven Concept Generation

After testing the current design and a round of market research the team realised that the current ‘one size fits all’ brush solution was not suitable for different hair types.

Solution

Designing a secondary wet-to-dry styling brush.

Our recommendation was to explore one type of brush in order to fulfill part of a user's hair care routine. We re-directed the brush concept into an untapped marketplace by functioning as a ‘secondary wet styling brush’. The shape and size of the brush head and bristles were then tailored to make it suitable for brushing straight and wavy hair when wet.

Through researching different hair types and finding gaps in the marketplace we were able to enhance the products functionality and drastically improve the user experience (removing the choppy-ness).

We are proud to say the client saw a huge benefit in the new design and they went on to manufacture the product with our recommendations.

"ProdActive were able to jump straight into our project with ease due to their previous experience in hair care. We found their input from human factors and design engineering incredibly helpful in solving the problems we were having with our current design. Their delivery was timely as well as ideal for our fast-paced R&D environment."
